Three steps to jump start self-empowerment
What does it mean to be empowered?
It’s generally thought that being empowered is when the way is paved for you to have the freedom to do what you love, perform, succeed and thrive. The tools and environment are perfectly in place to provide a clear runway to get done what you need to get done to achieve your goals.
For example, let’s say you’re working for a global corporation and moving along your career path at an acceptable pace, but you’d like to achieve the income and status that goes along with a promotion or executive challenge. Your current manager recognizes your potential and offers the guidance to help you improve your standing in the company. The environment within the company is all about promoting from within and stimulating growth stretches into ample opportunities.
You would think that in that type of environment you would be empowered to succeed, get a promotion, make more money and gain more status. But someone else wins the prize.
Here’s another example…
Let’s say you want to start your own business—strike out on your own or take a hobby to a new level and earn income from your passion. You may believe you need the right environment to move forward to fulfill that desire. You decide, “Oh, I need to save up money before I quit my job so I can sustain the transition to self-employment.” Or, “I need to have my brand set up—a website, business cards, marketing brochures, etc.—before I quit my job and go out on my own.” Or, “I need a certain amount of ‘product’ on the shelves before I go out and start marketing my wares.”
You would think that once those decisions were made and complete, you’d achieve success out on your own. But in reality, they’re simply stalling tactics.
What is common in both examples: the working-for-a-global-corporation example and the starting-your-own-business example?
They both rely on external conditions to create a fertile environment for your desired outcome.
So how is that empowerment when you seek conditions to allow your dreams to be fulfilled? It’s not.
Here’s the distinction: SELF-empowerment is a way for you to generate empowerment from within regardless of the conditions or environment.
Think about it—a person who is truly SELF-empowered is not swayed by conditions or their environment—they move forward in spite of it. They disregard it. They realize that they don’t need things to be laid out perfectly for them to achieve success. They self-generate their empowerment.
Three easy steps to your self-empowerment
Here’s a three-step process to generate your own empowerment, regardless of your situation:
Write your goal in one clear, concise sentence. For example, “I want to do pottery full time so I can replace the income from my corporate job.”
Make a list of all of the conditions you think need to be in place for you to be able to achieve your goal.
For each item on that list, circle the ones you can control.
Get busy working on those items and dismiss the rest. Why? Because there’s no empowerment in things you can’t control. Just do your thing and let everything fall into place.
Bonus tip: Envision and feel the emotions associated with the final state of your goal. The more you focus on the end experience—what it will feel like, look like, and release any resistance or “but’s”—the faster you’ll get there.
