MSL 107 - My Book Publishing Journey
Publishing and marketing books as part of your business offerings is a great marketing tool for your solopreneur business. In this episode, I share my book publishing journey and how I went about writing and publishing six books (all non-fiction so far) as part of creating additional revenue streams for my one-person business. Also, I love to write and wanted to see how far I could take my writing. (I'm still on that journey, too!)
For a while there, I thought for sure I was going to be the next big author. I poured my heart into learning about publishing, attending writing conventions, etc. I exhausted many resources from a ton of Writer’s Digest books on becoming a better writer to grammar and formatting books (Lapsing into a Comma is great) to attending a writing workshop that gave me the idea for my one and only murder mystery, The Trojan Murders, which was a TOTAL BLAST to write! But man, fiction is a lot tougher than non-fiction. It was a great journey to take on for nearly a decade until I realized I could bring much more value to people with the work I did (plus the income was important too) and my author journey took an off-ramp.
Are more books in my future, yeah, I can feel the itch returning to the forefront. Soon I will get back on the publishing superhighway and have some new fun because I love a new project to work on.
Episode prompt
Look for opportunities to create (or augment existing) a book or series of books that close a gap in your ideal client’s journey or help build your personal brand for your business. It can be a how-to book, a series of books that help your clients get ready to work with you or for the tire-kickers who either don’t have the money or value your larger offerings. Create additional revenue streams and help spread the word about your skills, knowledge and expertise in your area so you become a thought leader, a teacher, a guide, a coach—however you want your personal brand to be presented so you drive prospects to connect, follow, and eventually hire you as well as refer you because you’re being so generous with your knowledge and teachings.
