How to expand your audience by guesting on podcasts

The below “rant” video is a high-level overview of things to watch out for, based on my experience and preferences as a podcast producer and host. Note that all podcast producers and hosts have their own strategy as far as who guests on their show and what they’re trying to accomplish with their show. Don’t be discouraged if you don’t get warmly embraced with every outreach. Take time to get to know the podcast host, listen to their shows, and read the reviews.

A big value that you can bring to another podcaster is YOUR audience and consistent, ongoing promotion of your guest appearance to YOUR audience. Podcasters are always looking to expand their audience, just like YOU are looking to expand your audience and reach more people. If you go into the collaboration with that attitude, you’ll have more success.

Ask yourself these questions for each show you want to guest on:

  • What is my honest strategy for guesting on podcasts?

  • Why do I want to be on this particular podcast (for each one)?

  • What can I contribute to this show’s audience?

  • Can I have a conversation with the podcast host prior to guesting? (I always like to talk to my potential guests first before booking them to make sure they’re a fit and I gel with them because of the dynamic I create on my show)

  • What is it about me that may add value to this show and its audience?

  • Do I have something I can offer in the form of a freebie, discount or download to the audience?

  • Is my bio, photo and links easily and readily accessible?

  • Can I be articulate, lighthearted and 1000% me in front of the mic and camera?
